People seek out our orchards because we go for that optimum, tree-ripened flavor. We want our customers to have an eating experience, so they try our cherries and say ‘Wow’.
Stockton, CA (PRWEB) July 11, 2012
This Wednesday is National Rainier Cherry Day, celebrating the six-week season of this premium cherry with extraordinary sweetness and distinctive golden-red skin. Rainiers are the most popular cherry variety at Barrett Orchards, a family farm in eastern Washington's Yakima Valley, run by fourth-generation orchardists Mark and Cheryl Barrett. Over the weekend they celebrated their 7th annual Cherry Festival, a day of live music, hay rides, a “pit spitting” contest and more, with many visitors traveling over 150 miles to take part. For cherry lovers who can't pick directly from the orchards, FromTheFarm.com has partnered with Barrett Orchards to offer their Rainier and dark, sweet, fresh cherries delivered directly to consumers’ doorsteps.
Both Cheryl and Mark come from a long line of Pacific Northwest fruit growers, and want to share the same tree-ripened flavor they grew up with. "There are hand-picked cherries for sale in every store in Washington," Mark explains "but people seek out our orchards because we go for that optimum, tree-ripened flavor. We want our customers to have an eating experience, so they try our cherries and say ‘Wow’. That's what we're looking for." With FromTheFarm, customers all over the country can now share this ‘taste experience’, as the Barretts often harvest and ship cherries picked from their orchards the very same day.
As other cherry-growing regions struggle to stock their cherry season celebrations, Barrett said “this year we received an excellent, huge crop. The flavor is just great.” It’s been over a century since Mark’s great grandfather William Barrett moved to the Northwest from Oklahoma in 1908 to strike “apple gold.” Mark and Cheryl have since diversified their crop to include cherries and other stone fruit, but the ideal growing conditions of Barrett Orchards remain. Eastern Washington State is world-renowned for its dry climate (which reduces pests and insects), sunshine, cold evenings, rich volcanic soils and pristine snow melt from the Cascade Mountains, making it one of the best cherry-growing regions.
The short six-week season for Rainier cherries means that the Barretts will only ship this exceptional variety through July 16th. Dark, sweet "Sweetheart" cherries are available through July 25th.
In honor of cherry season and National Rainier Cherry Day, FromTheFarm is also hosting a "Very Cherry" Facebook Giveaway for three 10-pound cherry combination cases with fresh Rainier and dark, sweet cherries from Barrett Orchards. Click here to enter.
