Tollfreenumber.ORG and other telecom firms celebrate a telephone milestone this year with the 45th anniversary of toll free numbers such as the world-famous 1(800) area code.

Tollfreenumber.ORG and other telecom companies this year are celebrating the 45th anniversary of toll free numbers in the United States. Started by AT&T in 1967, toll-free numbers were created as an alternative to collect calling, and also as a way to reduce the need for telephone operators. Today, toll-free numbers are used by businesses and individuals nationwide.

“Toll-free numbers are very common and have proven successful for businesses, particularly in the areas of customer service and telemarketing. Toll-free service provides potential customers and others with a ‘free’ and convenient way to contact businesses,” the Federal Communications Commission notes on its website, http://www.fcc.gov.

Toll-free numbers in the United States originally were handled exclusively by AT&T, and they all had an 800 area code. Beginning in 1984 with the breakup of AT&T, consumers had more choices in seeking toll-free numbers, but it was only in 1993 that toll-free numbers became portable – meaning consumers could take their toll-free phone numbers with them when they switched telephone carriers. Because demand for toll-free numbers has been so great, today toll-free numbers have been expanded to include the 888, 877, 866 or 855 area codes, as well as the more commonly known “800 numbers.”

Tollfreenumber.ORG CEO Logan Marshall says businesses obtain toll-free numbers to increase customer response, enhance their professional image, make advertising more efficient, and improve record-keeping of incoming calls from potential clients. Private individuals use the numbers as well, he said, to keep in touch with distant family members, increase safety when placing or answering personal ads, and prevent telephone harassment.
