"We have connected with and are in fact at the forefront of a travel mindset that goes beyond borders, for people who are looking to experience a place like the locals.” Greg Sullivan, co-founder, AFAR Media

Greg Sullivan, co-founder of San Francisco-based AFAR Media announced today that AFAR has partnered with eMedia GmbH of Hanover to distribute the German language edition of AFAR magazine. Available throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the fall of 2012, the magazine will be offered quarterly.

The German edition is AFAR’s first in a foreign language.

AFAR Media launched AFAR magazine three years ago in September 2009. It brought a unique approach to travel, appealing to globally minded travelers looking to get beneath the surface of a place to have better travel experiences. The magazine has been received extremely well and is one of the fastest growing magazines in the US market, growing from a paid circulation of 50,000 at launch to over 175,000 today. It has also been extremely well received by advertisers with ad pages up 100% year-end in 2011 and carries a host of global brands including Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Mercedes, Jaguar, and Porsche.

“We are very excited to be launching a German language edition of AFAR in partnership with Heise’s eMedia division," says Sullivan. “We have connected with and in fact are at the forefront of a travel mindset that goes beyond borders, for people who are looking to experience a place like the locals.”

Sullivan continued, “This is very early in the history of a magazine to be launching a foreign language edition, and it speaks volumes about both the quality of content and the global movement that we are leading. We believe that this will be the first of many foreign language editions, as more and more people around the world are looking at travel in an AFARish way.”

Germany has the largest outbound tourist trade in the world, with Germans spending about USD74 billion annually to travel abroad (the United States is second), in spite of Germany being fourth in the world in GDP and sixteenth in population. Germany also has the sixth largest inbound tourist trade, with receipts of around USD 39 billion.

“We are proud to be able to publish the first foreign language edition of USA’s fastest-growing travel magazine by licensing AFAR for the German language market,” explains Joerg Muehle, Managing Director of eMedia GmbH. “We would like to continue AFAR’s success story in Germany.”

AFAR is the multi-platform travel media brand that inspires and guides those who travel the world to connect with its people, experience their cultures, and understand their perspectives. Headquartered in San Francisco, with an office in New York City, the company launched in 2009. Its platforms include the award-winning AFAR magazine, the AFAR mobile app, the non profit AFAR Foundation, and immersive travel series AFAR Experiences.
