Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 11, 2012
WASHINGTON – (July 11, 2012) – The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) received a $50,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE: UPS). The grant will be used to benefit UNA-USA’s Global Classrooms® Model UN program, which engages middle and high school students around the world on contemporary international issues and institutions in an educational setting, cultivates global literacy, and builds the leadership skills necessary for active citizenship.
Since 1999, Global Classrooms has transformed from a promising national program into an international network, enriching students’ lives around the world. It has become a premiere international education program offering students valuable insight into the growing influence of globalization. The grant helps support 23 Global Classrooms Model UN conferences around the world, engaging more than 25,000 students every year.
“We are grateful to The UPS Foundation for its vision to support programs, like Global Classrooms, that connect today’s youth to the rest of the world,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Patrick Madden. “The UPS Foundation’s support of UNA-USA affirms the importance of melding current international issues with life skills in traditionally underserved public schools and communities.”
Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: nonprofit effectiveness; encouraging diversity; community safety; and environmental sustainability.
In 2011, The UPS Foundation distributed more than $45.3 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as Global Classrooms and provide support for building stronger communities.
“The UPS Foundation is honored to support UNA-USA’s efforts to teach students to be global citizens by developing literacy skills,” said UPS Foundation President Eduardo Martinez. “Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community.”
Global Classrooms Model UN has amazed school leaders around the globe with its ability to show that students deeply care about the world outside their local community. In Model UN, students role-play as ambassadors from UN member states, interest groups, and nongovernmental organizations in a simulation of the United Nations.
