Consilium has responded to one of the fastest growing segments in patient care today by creating a Hospital Medicine team focused exclusively on locum tenens staffing of hospitalists, a medical practitioner whose primary focus is care of patients in the hospital setting. According to the Society of Hospital Medicine, it’s the fastest growing physician specialty in history.
The demand for focused inpatient care physicians has outstripped supply, leaving many programs understaffed nation-wide. In a 2010 survey, the American Hospital Association reported 36,915,331 hospital admissions and only 31,000 hospitalists staffing approximately 70% of US hospitals.
"What sets Consilium apart from other staffing firms is that we are not content to just sit on the sidelines, only to be called in to fill the immediate need of our clients, but to assist with their staffing goals long-term. We listen to our client’s needs to provide guidance and service that is less commoditized and more personalized," said John Moberly, Vice President of Consilium Staffing.
The hospitalist model emerged in the mid-1990s as an alternative to primary care physicians managing their own patients both in and out of the hospital. Substantial growth of the field can be attributed to a variety of factors, including increasing pressure to improve quality and safety, limits on house staff duty hours, generally positive outcome data and increasing support of the model by primary care physicians and specialists.
The American Medical Association's medical journal sites that the presence of a Hospitalist division in a health care facility shortens hospital stays and may even lower hospital mortality rates, without sacrificing quality of care or satisfaction for the patient.
"Since day one, Consilium has been dedicated to create the perfect locum experience. With the creation of the hospital team, we are able to ensure the quality of service to both our clients and providers, ” Moberly said.
"Locum tenens" is a Latin phrase meaning "to hold the place of." Consilium Staffing partners with hospitals, primary care offices, urgent care centers, correctional institutions and other healthcare facilities that may be understaffed or underserved by sourcing physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are able to provide coverage on a temporary contract basis.
