St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) July 12, 2012
Kansas City will soon be featured nationally as an example of “best management practices” in stormwater management. David Dods, senior environmental engineer, URS Green Solutions, Kansas City, will present at the 2012 American Public Works Association (APWA) International Public Works Congress & Exposition, Aug. 26-29 in Anaheim, Calif.
Dods’ presentation, “Building Neighborhoods and Using Green Infrastructure to Reduce CSOs,” will highlight the construction of Kansas City's Middle Blue River Basin Green Solutions Pilot Project, the largest green infrastructure pilot project in the country to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs).
According to Dods, integrating stormwater controls into landscaping puts water to its best use and builds neighborhood streetscapes in the process. While addressing CSOs, green infrastructure provides supplemental benefits to the community including cleaner water and air, greener streets that include rain gardens, porous sidewalks and flower beds, summer shade, aesthetic improvements and economic opportunities.
The URS Green Solutions session will also:
- Examine how to integrate stormwater controls and community improvements through sustainable design approaches,
- Feature the various applications and benefits of using green infrastructure, and
- Discuss challenges and solutions when retrofitting stormwater controls for older neighborhoods.
Nicknamed “The Best Show in Public Works,” the APWA International Public Works Congress & Exposition draws thousands of public works professionals from around the world. This year’s conference will feature more than 125 educational sessions addressing current public works issues.
