Class “A” PGA Pro Brings Award-Winning Marketing & Management Expertise To Facility Inspired By World's Most Famous Golf Holes

Mel Graham, owner of International World Tour Golf Links in Myrtle Beach, S.C. has named Tom Plankers as World Tour's new meneral Manager. Plankers, who has more than three decades of experience managing golf facilities in the Myrtle Beach area, will oversee all aspects of the 27-hole facility that features golf holes inspired by famous courses like Augusta National and St. Andrews.

Plankers is well-known throughout the Myrtle Beach golf industry. He has served on the board of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, the organization charged with promoting Myrtle Beach golf around the world. As director of golf and marketing for Ocean Ridge Plantation, he led a team that won numerous awards, including “Top 100 in the U.S.” for both golf courses and pro shops. Most recently, he served as president and general manager of Sea Trail Golf Resort & Convention Center, where he oversaw two clubhouses and pro shops, a golf package company and food and beverage services.

Best known for a solid track record of building golf rounds and improving profitability through increasing golf revenue and operational efficiencies, Plankers' many accolades include Carolinas' PGA's Merchandiser of the Year — Resort Category (2002) and a nomination for “National Merchandiser of the Year — Resort Category” in 2003. His dedication to delivering great customer service helped capture the attention of travel guides that rely upon consumer input. America’s Top Golf Courses, the prestigious ZagatSurvey®/ESPN travel guide, applauded his team for “unmatched service.”

Plankers has won six Carolinas PGA Section Pro-Am tournaments and five PGA Senior Carolina events. Dedicated to growing the game of golf, Plankers is an active supporter of “Kids Play Free” programs and “Hook-A-Kid on Golf.”

“Tom has terrific management and marketing skills,” said Mel Graham. “Anyone who knows him will tell you that he is a major force in the Grand Strand golf industry. He has a reputation for delivering results, and I'm delighted to be able to add him to our team.”

Located in Myrtle Beach, World Tour is unlike any other golf facility in the Carolinas. It offers recreational golfers the opportunity to experience the thrill of playing great holes from around the world. Inspired by actual holes that are located thousands of miles apart, Mel Graham designed three championship nines whose holes fit together seamlessly.

The Championship course honors layouts that have hosted a major tournament such as Augusta National, home of The Masters, and Oakmont Country Club, the first golf course in the U.S. to be named a National Historic Landmark.

The Open course includes holes inspired by courses that have hosted the U.S. and British Opens such as No. 1 and No. 18 at St. Andrews and No. 16 on Pinehurst No. 2.

The International was inspired by courses from England, Spain, Australia and the United States like Spain’s Valderrama Golf Club’s No. 4 and No. 9 at Royal Melbourne, the oldest continually operating golf course in Australia.

“It's really exciting to be part of a complex like World Tour,” says Plankers. “On their own, each layout flows like any other well-designed golf course. But, there's nothing to compare with the thrill of World Tour's Amen Corner or taking on the challenge of the the par 3 that evokes the TPC of Sawgrass' famous number 17 island green. This is a place where every golfer with a passion for the game can play out his or her golf fantasies. I'm just proud to be part of it.”

A native of California, Plankers began his career in golf as a caddy in Richland, Washington, before coming to North Carolina for a job as an assistant golf professional. He soon was moving up and around various North Carolina golf clubs, taking on responsibilities as a head golf professional, golf director and general manager.
