Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC) administrators have been honoring employees whose actions have exemplified the medical center’s core values on a monthly basis for more than six years. And after all those months, the June recognition ceremonies acknowledged the largest single group of employees since their inception. That’s because more than 60 employees, who volunteered their time to help the Raritan Bay Medical Center Foundation, were recognized for their support of two of the foundation’s annual springtime fundraising events; the Inspirations Art Show and the Sports Classic.
“The fact that so many employees volunteer their time and energy to help raise funds for the medical center and ultimately our patients, is a testament to their dedication to the medical center’s mission and the level of respect we all feel for our community,” said Nancy Barone, executive vice president, Raritan Bay Medical Center Foundation.
To date the ‘Manager’s Choice Award’ ceremonies have honored more than 2,000 employees from the RBMC’s Old Bridge and Perth Amboy locations. The choice awards began with the creation of a reward and recognition team at the medical center and in response to the need to give greater acknowledgement of employee contributions, discovered during employee forums.
“It is vitally important that our medical center’s managers and leaders acknowledge employees who, by their actions, encourage camaraderie and cooperation between team members. Our patients notice and are comforted by the teamwork,” said Debbie Petrucelli, co-chair of the reward and recognition committee and director of patient escort and linen and environmental services. “The manager’s choice award ceremonies are the perfect event for staff to be celebrated.”
RBMC managers nominate an employee each month who is worthy of specific recognition. Nominations are based on actions taken that support the medical center’s Pride in Caring principles (signifying high-quality care and respect for patients and their families), promote the medical center’s Patient Family Centered Care professional practice model or align with organizational goals.
During the ceremonies descriptions of nominees’ actions are prominently displayed along with their photos and two $50 cash prizes and two food vouchers are awarded by raffle. The program has been well received by front line team members, management and senior leadership and is alive and well in 2012. In fact, the medical center’s President and CEO Michael R. D’Agnes decided to raffle off two $500 awards at the end of 2012 including all staff recognized last year.
“Staff are recognized by their manager for doing things that set them apart from the everyday tasks, which at times can be overwhelming and stressful,” said Debbie Prinzo, RN, co-chair of the reward and recognition committee and nurse manager of the Old Bridge medical day stay unit. “It is a simple recognition for a job well done that has a significant impact on the staff at RBMC.”
