Mission Hills, the world’s largest golf club with 22 courses at two different locations in southern China, is expecting increased golf tourism from Australia, especially to its resort on the island of Hainan, following a successful marketing trip Down Under.
A roadshow of events conducted by Mission Hills’ marketing and sales executives in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane attracted golf tour operators, travel agents, web-based golf businesses and leading golf club managers.
Comprising a mixture of current and potential clients, the attendees at the events all expressed interest in commencing or extending business to Mission Hills’ properties at Shenzhen/Dongguan and on China’s tropical southern island of Hainan.
Australia is the largest provider of golf tourists to Mission Hills after Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The high Australian dollar, Mission Hills’ reputation for quality and service and easy access from Hong Kong to both its resorts are factors that should ensure higher visitor numbers in the future.
Mission Hills is a brand already well known in Australia, and with more than a million golfers in Australia, more and more of whom are travelling overseas to play golf, there is considerable room for extra business.
A major focus of the Australian trip was promotion of Mission Hills’ 10-course golf complex at Haikou on Hainan island. As the venue for the bi-annual Omega Mission Hills World Cup, most recently played on the resort’s acclaimed Blackstone course last November, and the World Celebrity Pro-Am to be played on the same layout from October 18-21 this year, the complex has become a focal point of Hainan tourism.
Among many attractions, it boasts the world’s largest collection of volcanic golf courses, which opened in 2010 and now attract visitors from all over the world.
Mission Hills Haikou is also the venue of Asia’s largest mineral springs complex, a panoply of themed pavilions from five continents with 168 different mineral springs pools, which opened in October 2011.
Together with an aquatic theme park, acclaimed restaurants and 8000 square-metre spa facilities, the resort is a perfect family-oriented destination, which can be reached from Hong Kong on short daily 45-minute flights to Haikou, just 20 minutes’ drive away.
A coming attraction is a major shopping and entertainment complex being jointly developed at the Haikou resort by Mission Hills and Hong Kong-based conglomerate Lan Kwai Fong. Scheduled to open in late 2013, the new project will feature hotels, cinemas, bowling, ice-skating, fine dining and MICE facilities as well as more than 300 shops.
