Crystal Summer, who offer holidays to Lucerne, learnt that the Lucerne Festival began as a series of concerts in the gardens of Wagner's villa, originally founded in 1938 by Arturo Toscanini. Toscanini had put together members of different orchestras and soloists for the first concert.

The first ever Lucerne Festival started in style attracting heavy-weight performers and conductors like Toscanini and Mengelberg, Ansermet and Walter. Since then the festival has goes from strength to strength now featuring top international orchestras, conductors and soloists such as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam and the Leipzig Gewandhaus, to name but a few regulars.

This year’s Lucerne Festival runs for five and a half weeks; from 8 August to 15 September 2012. The annual event will this year focus on the theme of “Faith”, exploring and celebrating the relationship between music, faith, and spirituality. Performances come from a broad spectrum of music history: from works of sacred music by Bach, Schubert, and Bruckner, Verdi’s dramatic Requiem to Stravinsky’s “Symphony of Psalms” and Schoenberg’s opera “Moses und Aron.” The festival will hear great virtuosos, world-famous orchestras, and legendary conductors.

Lucerne in Central Switzerland makes a spectacular setting for the festival. Set on the western shore of the Lake Lucerne, the city is set around the lake’s clear blue glacial waters and framed by tree lined mountains. The magical surroundings make outdoor activities a priority here. Anything from a gentle lakeside stroll along the promenade to faster paced sports such as canyoning and motor boating are all available here. The lake can be explored by steamer and enjoyed at the lido, plus the lakeside bars offer relaxed evenings. The city provides plenty of other non-sporting activities too; from art galleries to regular markets in the old town, excellent shopping, and lively bars, Lucerne is a treat for all.
