Meadowbrook, PA (PRWEB) July 14, 2012
Betz Homes was recently honored with a National Contractor of the Year Award by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for a project in the Entire House $500,001 to $1,000,000 category. The award was presented at NARI’s Evening of Excellence™ ceremony in Grapevine, TX on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
Contractors from seven regions nationwide compete for the awards on an annual basis. Twenty-five national CotY winners were named at this year’s ceremony.
Betz Homes won their National CotY Award for the renovation of a 150 year old, bank barn in Philadelphia, PA. For this project, Betz Homes skillfully transformed the historic barn into a personal residence for empty nesters.
The project began with careful documentation of the original barn structure. Plans were drawn to address challenges like uneven floors, out of square walls and the additional structural support needed to incorporate the original cantilever roof and timber framework into the design plan.
Betz Homes’ innovative solutions to these challenges resulted in a bright, open, dream home which artfully marries the old with the new. The ground level includes a pool cabana with multi-function area: kitchen, bath, shower, sauna and laundry. A curtain wall overlooking the existing pool was designed to provide the necessary structure for generous amounts of glass doors and windows. The original timber frame was reinforced and remains as a design element. A third floor was added while maintaining the existing roofline. Large dormers and eight foot tall glass doors with phantom screens were added to provide ventilation and natural light. Modern amenities like a high efficiency boiler with air handlers on each floor, zoned radiant heat and an elevator provide comfort and accessibility throughout the home. Unique design features like a glass-encased circular staircase, openings through 24 inch stonewalls, half round windows, balconettes and a custom barrel vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom complete the dramatic transformation.
The National CotY winners were selected by an impartial panel of judges who are experts within the industry and associated fields. Judging focused on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.
