Nick Kouvelos seems to understand and appreciate what it means to be young, curious and filled with boundless energy. He sees the world in which we live through a child’s eyes; he sees, on behalf of the children he loves, a world of innocence and hope, beauty and joy.
Kouvelos has taken that childlike spirit and put it into words and pictures. He has just published Around the Corner I Take a Look, a lovely, engaging book of poetry for youngsters that is dedicated, not at all surprisingly to his wife and young children. The words, the poetry, the charming illustrations all stem from the writer’s creative pen.
Around the Corner takes ordinary, everyday events and sees them through the prism of a child’s eye and a child’s imagination. Kouvelos writes of fire trucks, and Halloween witches, and noisy crickets and turtles and frogs and rabbits and fish in a pond. He writes of falling off a bike and bashing his face – as we all have done, at one time or another – and he writes of the nighttime stars and the wonders of bedtime and the dreams that await.
It all comes together in a lovely, loving presentation, the kind of book that youngsters can either read for themselves or one that parents can read to their kiddies at bedtime. It also comes highly recommended, for this is the kind of book – and these are the kinds of lovely little poems that will spark a child’s imagination and delight their senses.
Around the Corner I Take a Look is a Dad’s enduring gift to the kids he loves so dearly.
