Author and professional trainer Christopher Eckhoff believes there is a great deal of confusion about competitive bird dog events. To answer that confusion he presents his nonfiction book “Following The Scent: Bird Dogs, Their Handlers, and Field Trialing” (published by AuthorHouse).
“Following the Scent” is a two-year journal of Eckhoff’s efforts training two dogs: one is already a champion and the other is a new competitor just starting out. The dogs – Lefty and Pearl – are competing at different stages, but Eckhoff’s careful notes reveal to the reader exactly how he brings each dog along.
Each chapter of the book is divided into two parts: the progress of the two subject dogs, and an issue about field trialing related to that chapter’s experiences from either a field trial or hunting standpoint.
"I have enjoyed every type of performance related bird dog event in which I have ever participated,” Eckhoff says, “from local bird dog club fun trials to horseback all-age field trials. Performance bird dog events, whether full blown field trials for a national championship or a test program have always been fun.”
Perfect for anyone looking to learn more about competitive bird dog training, “Following the Scent” is available now from major online booksellers.
