On July 13, 2012, Rapid Recovery Solution released a statement regarding recent allegations that a debt collection agency representing the bankrupt company, Hollywood Video, has been hounding former customers for late fees that the accused claim are invalid.
According to an article from the Huffington Post, debt collection companies, West Bay and Universal Fidelity, are working on behalf of the now-bankrupt Hollywood Video. They have targeted several people with late fees that they claim they owe. Hollywood Video has been in bankruptcy for the past couple of years, a third of the stores shut down as a result.
According to a report from the Huffington Post, one woman living in Nevada, named Deborah Finnegan, said that she received a claim that she owed $140 for a collection of 15 videos that she watched. While she recognized some of the titles, saying she watched them, she claimed that others were unfamiliar to her.
If the consumer’s allegations against West Bay, Universal Fidelity, and Hollywood Video are founded, it is possible debt collectors have been violating several rules put into place in order to collect funds. However, if the fees are, in fact, proven to be valid the customers of the former video rental store are legally obligated to pay the money owed as an outstanding debt.
“I think that the customers should ask that these fees be validated,” said John Monderine, President and CEO of Rapid Recovery Solution, Inc. “And if they are valid, the customers should pay the fees.”
