According to a study released on February 1, 2012 by the University of British Columbia, the use of Drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives (OC) greatly increases the likelihood of developing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Yaz, once the most popular form of oral contraceptive on the market, utilizes Drospirenone.
The British Columbia study consisted of 939,281 women averaging about 29 years of age and 247 days of OC treatment. The annualized incidence for IBS with Drospirenone (1083 victims) was 224% higher than with Levonorgestrel (483 victims).

Studies linking Yaz and Yasmin to serious and life-threatening health complications are not new.
In June of 2012, the New England Journal of Medicine released a study that linked utilizing Ethinyl Estradiol (ingredient in Yaz and Yasmin) to an increased risk of thrombotic stroke and myocardial infarction. The study found the risk of these medical conditions to increase by a factor of 0.9 to 1.7 when taking oral contraceptives that included Ethinyl Estradiol at a dose of 20 μg.
