“I’m happy to offer these free eBook guides to Tampa and Charlotte to Democratic and Republican delegates, or anyone who wants to visit these unique American cities regardless of their political persuasion,” Newlin said.

Moon Travel Guides believes mixing a little pleasure with business is a right of every U.S. citizen. To encourage that ethic, the Berkeley-based publisher is offering free downloadable eBook copies of its Moon Charlotte and Moon Tampa & St. Petersburg guidebooks to attendees of the Republican and Democratic convention cities of Charlotte and Tampa. The books are also available for free to visitors to these two cities not attending the conventions.

The free eBooks, which are packed with helpful travel tips and insider info on hotels, restaurants, attractions, and more, are available for download at the Apple iBookstore, BarnesandNoble.com, the Amazon Kindle store, the Sony Reader Store, and at kobobooks.com until the end of September. The eBooks can be read on eReader devices, tablets, or convention attendees can download an app and read them on their smartphone.

Laura Reiley, author of Moon Tampa and St. Petersburg, encourages Republican delegates to get out of the convention hall and explore. She also suggests sampling a local delicacy—the Cuban sandwich.

“In Tampa, the Cuban is the king of the sandwiches,” Reiley said. She recommends La Segunda Central Bakery where the loaves have a flaky crust and soft interior. “The loaf is piled high with roast pork and Genoa salami (a strictly Tampa twist), Swiss cheese, sour pickles, and spicy mustard—the whole thing warmed in a hot-press. The outside is crisp, the inside warm and a little gooey—it’s perfection,” she said. For more places to taste Cuban sandwiches and other Tampa specialties read Laura’s author Q&A at Moon.com.

Not to be outdone, Jodi Helmer, the author of Moon Charlotte, is pushing culture and activity in historic Charlotte. The Levine Museum of the New South has world-class exhibits that offer a great introduction to the people and places that have shaped the South. But if a Democratic conventioneer wants a real break from the business of the day, Helmer recommends the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

“It’s an Olympic training facility where Democratic delegates can ride the rapids in a raft, hook up to a zipline and fly, or try standup paddle boarding,” Helmer said. To find more suggestions for food, drink, and shopping in Charlotte, you can read Helmer’s suggestions at Moon.com.

For Avalon Travel publisher Bill Newlin, mixing travel and politics is natural. Newlin grew up in a Foreign Service family where political discussion trumped talk of baseball. They lived in Latin America and Europe, and the family home is now located in Washington D.C.

“I’m happy to offer these free eBook guides to Tampa and Charlotte to Democratic and Republican delegates, or anyone who wants to visit these unique American cities regardless of their political persuasion,” Newlin said.
