We are extremely pleased to once again have 11 players ranked in the top 50 in the world at our event

The 2012 Texas Tennis Open announced its official player field today, which includes 11 players ranked in the WTA top 50. This year’s field includes last year’s champion and 2012 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Sabine Lisicki, 2012 Wimbledon semifinalist and world ranked No. 7 Angelique Kerber, as well as former world ranked No. 1 Jelena Jankovic. In total, the player acceptance list includes 16 players who will compete at the London Olympics.

The Texas Tennis Open, which is part of the WTA, is an “international level” tournament with prize money of $220,000 and features a singles draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16 teams. The tournament, which will play host to an international field of players, will take place August 17 through August 24, 2012 at the Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel in Grapevine, Texas.

“We are extremely pleased to once again have 11 players ranked in the top 50 in the world at our event,” said Chris Giordano, Texas Tennis Open Tournament Director. “We believe that this is one of the best women’s draws at this level in North America, and are ready for North Texans to be treated to this great level of tennis.”

The full list of top 50 ranked WTA players includes: No. 7 Angelique Kerber, No. 18 Sabine Lisicki, No. 20 Jelena Jankovic, No. 27 Roberta Vinci, No. 31 Peng Shuai, No. 32 Klara Zakopalova, No. 34 Monica Niculescu, No. 42 Chanelle Scheepers, No. 43 Sorana Cirstea, No. 46 Yaroslava Shvedova and No. 50 Marina Erakovic.

As the women’s draw at Wimbledon unfolded earlier this month, two of the committed players (Lisicki and Kerber) found themselves playing each other in the 4th round. And while Lisicki had just beaten No. 1 seed Maria Sharapova in the 4th round, Kerber took the third and final set against Lisicki, 7-5. As Kerber comes into the Texas Tennis Open, she holds her highest career ranking at No. 7 in the world.

Matches at this year’s event will be held at night, including a night match final on Friday, August 24 to be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.

Texas Tennis Open tickets and ticket packages are currently being sold through Texas Tennis Open Ticket Office by calling (817) 313-3428 or through Ticketmaster.
