Crucible Technologies launch product to assess the risk of interference from 4G to the operation of Short Range Wireless Devices

Products that use short range wireless devices such as Social Alarms face a significant risk to their operation from the introduction of the new wireless broadband network, commonly known as 4G. Crucible Technologies have launched the 4G Out of Band Simulator to help organisations assess the risk to the performance of their products.

Most users of Short Range wireless Devices (SRD) are not aware of the significant risk posed by the introduction of the new wireless broadband network, commonly known as 4G. Field trials are in progress now and the commissioning of the first UK base station is scheduled to commence late in 2012.

There are an estimated 1 million radio based Social Alarms currently protecting the elderly and infirm in the UK. In addition there are numerous fire and intruder alarms that use the licence free 868 MHz band that can be affected by 4G handsets.

“Surprisingly, in the SRD fraternity there has been an extraordinarily limited amount of discussion in the public domain on this critical issue,” said Martyn Gawthorpe, the Managing Director of Continental Compliance. “Interference to TV services had some tens of millions of Euro spent by Governments over a number of years to assess and mitigate the impact of 4G base stations and handsets. Unfortunately, users of the SRD band remain very much in the dark to what's going on.”

However, most interested parties do not have to wait another 2 years to measure the impact of 4G handsets on their wireless networks. The 4G Interference Simulator from Continental Compliance allows out of band emissions simulation by placing the simulator antenna adjacent to your product.

“We are very pleased that Martyn has chosen us to distribute their product worldwide,” said Seggy T Segaran, Technical Director at Crucible Technologies. “We have over 20 years of experience of selling test instrumentation around the world. In the last few weeks we have already had orders from companies wanting to test the robustness of their wireless systems in the presence of interference from 4G.”

“It’s great that 2 Yorkshire based companies can work together to promote a locally manufactured product,” added Seggy.
