Construction on Dalian Civic Plaza nearing completion.

Construction is almost complete on the 4 ½ acre Civic Plaza in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. RGA Landscape Architects designed the public plaza to accommodate the need for residents living in nearby high density apartments for active and passive use open space.

The plaza incorporates areas for active use for senior activities, children's play areas, civic functions and quiet contemplation. Of considerable difficulty was designing areas that meet all of the varied user groups needs within the 4.5 acre area and allowing for a sense of separation between spaces so they each feel somewhat private in a country known for its lack of personal space and crowded conditions.

Great care was given to also design to the needs of the environment and with a landscape that is visually interesting in all times of the year even during the winter months when Dalian can be rather bleak in appearance.

It will be of considerable interest to the RGA Design team how the Plaza spaces will perform under the intensive use of the nearby residents, as it is the first Civic space they have designed in China that is for public use. In the past the firm has designed many private use areas for residents of communities that are not subject to the same level of intensive use.
