“Thus began our journey of learning to separate our loving Lord Jesus Christ from the church that had so gravely misrepresented him.”

Darla Hannah Melancon shares her family’s painful, firsthand experience with sexual misconduct in the church in her memoir, “The Things I Learned After Being Kicked Out of Church” (published by AuthorHouse).
It was May 2001 when Melancon’s 10-year-old son, Isaiah, told her about being sexually molested at age 6 by the daughter of a fellow church staff member. Filled with shock and outrage, the author and her husband turned to their pastors to help them work through the pain of such a traumatic event.
After meeting with church leaders, the family felt anything but reassured. “Not only were they poorly equipped to help us, they chose to betray us,” Melancon writes. “Thus began our journey of learning to separate our loving Lord Jesus Christ from the church that had so gravely misrepresented him.”
Melancon is hopeful that her book will speak to readers coping with similar circumstances. An excerpt from “The Things I Learned After Being Kicked Out of Church”:
“Looking back over the centuries, I note many events in which the church misrepresented, slandered and/or abused the character of God. And yet, like the Father of the prodigal son, our Heavenly Father has not rejected or abandoned the church. He continues to meet individuals with loving and tender care in spite of the shameful things that the church has done in the Name of the God of Creation. Unlike earthly fathers that often feel the need to abandon or disown a child whom they feel reflects badly on them, our Heavenly Father persists in expressing His love even when we reflect poorly on Him. Remember, God is so patient that even after centuries of misrepresentation by the church in which scriptures were twisted and used to justify everything from abusing individuals to starting wars, He has not abandoned those that seek Him. He will not abandon you either!”
