60% of enterprises maintain a corporate liable mobile device policy, but employee-owned and “hybrid” approaches are more popular than ever according to a survey of IT and telecom professionals by CCMI and Dimension Data | Xigo.

As more powerful and robust systems, that address multiple OSs, hit the market the tide will turn even further toward either a hybrid or fully BYOD strategy.

CCMI today released the results of a survey, commissioned by Xigo, Dimension Data’s wholly owned telecommunications expense management (TEM) solutions company, that puts hard numbers around the scope and direction of the BYOD (bring your own device) phenomena.

The BYOD trend gives employees control over the devices and operating systems they use for business purposes, but it also raises significant support and security concerns. Of the 116 IT and telecommunications professionals surveyed, most revealed their enterprise has not fully adopted a BYOD management model.

Key survey findings include:

  • 22% of respondents use a hybrid approach that uses corporate-liable devices as well as BYOD; 10% of respondents were fully BYOD.
  • For firms that allow BYOD, 54% have had the policy in place for at least two years.
  • RIM’s Blackberry retains the largest share of enterprise support with 27%.
  • BYOD policies have not been effective in reducing expenses … most respondents experienced no change or actually saw their costs increase.

“BYOD is more prevalent than ever before, but corporate concerns about security and support are the main barriers to actual adoption,” said George David, president of CCMI. He added, “That said, it is obvious that as more powerful and robust systems, that address multiple OSs, hit the market that the tide will turn even further toward either a hybrid or fully BYOD strategy.”

“Enterprises are constantly looking for ways to reduce costs without hurting employee productivity,” added Dave Spofford, CEO of Xigo. “One constant theme that runs throughout these findings is that in order to be successful, enterprises need stronger control of their company’s mobile usage so that the proper policies and data plans can be put in place.”
