Parents need new methods for monitoring cell phone and internet use.

“Social FireFly keeps parents informed,” said Protect America CEO Thad Paschall. “As a parent myself I worry about predators and cyber-bullies. This app makes being a parent a little bit easier.”

Protect America, Inc. has teamed up with Internet safety experts uKnow.com to release a social monitoring app that helps parents follow their kids’ online activities.

Social Firefly lets parents keep an eye on their kids’ cell phone and social network usage. Parents can even use Social Firefly to locate their children in real time. Available on computers as well as Android and Blackberry devices, Social Firefly is installed on tweens and teens phones and linked with social networks, like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. The app is intended to help parents monitor for a range of new tech threats, such as cyber-bullying and sexual predators.

“The dangers facing kids are different than 10 or 15 years ago,” said Adrian Salas, a spokesman for Protect America. “Parents need to know their children are safe, whether they’re at home, at school, or online.”

Supervising youth activity on social networks, cell phones, and email can be daunting. This level of monitoring produces a large amount of data that can be difficult to sort through. Social Firefly sends parents a daily activity report that breaks down their child’s online and cell phone use. The app even provides slang and text-lingo translation to remove the guesswork from deciphering “teen speak”.

Austin-based home security company Protect America Inc, is offering Social Firefly to everyone for no cost. A basic account is free but access to information is limited. Social Firefly also has Essential Plus and Premier Account options that monitors your child's cell phone and social media usage. Once an account is created, you can also download the Social Firefly mobile app to your Blackberry or Android and monitor your child while on the go. The company wanted to offer parents a method for safeguarding their children against new technological threats while giving them the tools to better supervise them in the real world.

“Social FireFly keeps parents informed,” said Protect America CEO Thad Paschall. “As a parent myself I worry about predators and cyber-bullies. This app makes being a parent a little bit easier.”

Parents need new methods for monitoring cell phone and Internet use. Recent statistics show that 9 out of every 10 American teenagers has a cell phone. Approximately 20 percent of teenagers will be a victim text bullying and most of these incidents will go unreported to parents and teachers.
