Survalent Technology Commissions New SCADA System for Tampa Bay Water

Survalent Technology, the most trusted provider of smart grid solutions for the control room, announced today that it has converted a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system from a Dual Redundant to a Quad Redundant architecture for Tampa Bay Water.

Tampa Bay Water is a non-profit regional water supply authority that provides wholesale water to six local governments - three cities and three counties – for a total of 2.4 million residents in the Tampa Bay region. Tampa Bay Water’s regional network of water supply facilities is one of the most unique in the country. Water is blended and delivered from three river sources, a state-of-the-art surface water treatment plant, the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination Plant, a 15.5-billion gallon reservoir and groundwater from wells.

The previous system consisted of three Dual Redundant SCADA Masters at three different locations handling both the Water Distribution Network and the Water Treatment Plant of Tampa Bay Water. In order to streamline operations and to take advantage of new technologies, Tampa Bay Water has decided to merge the three dual redundant systems into one quad redundant system. At the same time, the decision was made to change the platform from OpenVMS running on Itanium processors to a Windows Server operating system. After the conversion, the new Quad Redundant System runs Windows on a VMware platform. Additionally, a Web Server was deployed for access by the member governments to the SCADA database, reports, graphs, etc.

“We welcome the decision made by Tampa Bay Water to change the architecture of their system from multiple OpenVMS systems to an integrated Windows-based Quad Redundant architecture,” states Mike Roth, Vice President of Sales for the Central United States. “The conversion will allow Tampa Bay Water to take full advantage of the intuitive nature of Windows versus VMS and to benefit of all the new exciting applications which are developed by Survalent on the Windows platform.”
