On June 29th, an unexpected thunderstorm struck the East Coast, taking out power lines from North Carolina to Maryland. Over 500,000 Baltimore Gas and Electric (BG&E) customers lost power, 2/3rds as many as those who lost power during Hurricane Irene in 2011.
For those who require regular nebulizer treatments, this was especially problematic. One such couple was Edna and Huell Matthews. Edna suffers from bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Luckily she and her husband owned an emergency generator, but to run her nebulizer they had to turn off every light in the house. If they didn’t have the generator, they would’ve had to go to their son’s house.
Then there’s Lisa, who lives with her three children in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains. They were out of power for over a week. Lisa’s youngest son, Cort, suffers from asthma and is supposed to have nebulizer treatments twice a day. Unlike the Matthews, Lisa did not own a generator and Cort had to go without nebulizer treatments until the power came back on.
“People need to have emergency plans in place, especially if they or their loved ones have a medical condition,” advised Just Nebulizers pharmacist and co-owner Bryan Mercer. “We recommend getting a portable nebulizer. Tabletop nebulizers are great for normal home use, but if you lose power you’re out of luck. And we know what that’s like. Our offices didn’t get power back till early the next week.”
Most portable nebulizers use a rechargeable battery, but some, like the Omron Micro-Air NE-U22V, can simply run off AA batteries. In fact, the Micro-Air is Just Nebulizers’ top selling portable nebulizer. “It’s a durable, lightweight, quiet nebulizer and it works great for everything from emergency use to just going on vacation” said Bryan. “We highly recommend it.”
Fortunately, the power’s back on in most places. But it only takes another storm to knock it out. Bryan’s advice? “Just be prepared and you’ll be fine. Annoyed maybe, but fine.”
