Sunset 2012 Idea House: Breezehouse

From the cutting edge technology and advanced green features to the expanses of windows that bring the outdoors in, this home is completely in step with our forward thinking readers

For its 2012 Idea House, Sunset magazine (, the premier guide to life in the West, will open the doors to the iconic Breezehouse in Healdsburg, CA in the heart of beautiful Sonoma County wine country. Built by Blu Homes and manufactured in the company’s Vallejo, California factory and “unfolded” at its final location in Healdsburg, the two-story home is the updated model of the original Breezehouse, which was debuted by Sunset in 2005.

Every year, the Sunset Idea House provides prospective homebuyers and design enthusiasts with an up-close and personal look at the hottest new trends for the Western home. The 2012 Sunset Idea House will open for tours to the public every weekend from August 3, 2012 to September 9, 2012; Friday-Sunday 10a.m.-5p.m., $17 per person, $15 for seniors on Fridays and children under 12 are free . A stunning 3D online tour of the home as well as more information about the tours can be found here:

“This year’s Idea House is as warm, open and inviting as it is innovative,” said Kitty Morgan, Sunset editor-in-chief. “I’m still amazed at how these homes are designed online in 3D, built in a factory and then ‘unfolded’—like a transformer!—at the building site. From the cutting edge technology and advanced green features to the expanses of windows that bring the outdoors in, this home is completely in step with our forward thinking readers.”

The home boasts two bedrooms, four bathrooms, separate den and office (which can also serve as bedrooms, expanding the bedroom count to four), a wine cellar and a separate “Breezepod” that will be transformed into a guest home. Alive with color and texture and expressive of the interests and passions of its inhabitants, the iconic Western indoor-outdoor lifestyle is embodied completely in the Breezehouse—from the home’s dramatic breezespace to an array of outdoor lounge areas and a water feature nestled into the stunning Sonoma Valley property.

Visitors to the Idea House website ( will find a series of features, including videos and a 3D “walk through” of the house, created using Blu Homes’ 3D Configurator, designed to provide a deeper look at the experts and advanced 3D building technology behind the Sunset Breezehouse. Visitors should continue to check back to the site as Sunset adds videos over the coming weeks, including a look at the Idea House’s “unfolding” and a full tour of the finished home.

For the 2012 Idea House, Sunset pulled together a team of experts from throughout California to complete the Breezehouse. This team consists of Blu Homes project architect Joseph Remick, interior designer Sharon Portnoy of Sharon Portnoy Design, landscape designer Steve Hinderberger of Hindesign, and plant designer Jessy Berg and landscape and interior stylist Bonnie Gemmell, both of Breezehouse sponsors include Agio, Benjamin Moore, Cost Plus World Market, CSI, Eldorado Stone, Gladiator, LEE Industries, Sunbrella, Suntory, and Warmboard.
