Zoloft is known as a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Antidepressant, or SSRI. Pfizer brought Zoloft to market in 1991, and the drug is approved to treat major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and anxiety disorders. A number of studies, however, indicate that use of Zoloft during pregnancy can cause a baby to be born with any number of birth defects. Just this past January, a large study conducted by researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutace and published in the British Medical Journal found that children born to women who took Zoloft and other SSRI antidepressants face double the risk of having a baby born with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), a life-threatening lung condition. [bmj.com/content/344/bmj.d8012]. An earlier study, published in 2006 in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that women who used SSRIs like Zoloft after the 20th week of pregnancy were six times more likely to give birth to an infant with PPHN. [nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa052744] A study published the following year in the NEJM found that babies born to women who used Zoloft during the first trimester of pregnancy were twice as likely to suffer heart-related birth defects, especially ventricular outflow defects and septal defects. [nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa067407].
In a Transfer Order dated 4/17/2012, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered that all Zoloft birth defect lawsuit filed in U.S. federal courts be transferred to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, before Judge Rufe. The 138 lawsuits currently pending in the litigation allege that Pfizer failed to warn patients and their doctors about the potential risk of birth defects when Zoloft is taken during pregnancy. All of the complaints in the litigation were brought on behalf of children who were born with serious birth defects following their mothers’ use of Zoloft during pregnancy.
