The nation’s first professional services cooperative for small and mid-sized employee benefit and insurance brokers is launched – the US–Independent Brokers Cooperative (US-IBC). US-IBC is the nation’s first professional services cooperative designed to meet the needs of independent brokers that is member owned and non-profit.

US-IBC allows small and mid-sized brokers to remain a viable force in the health care and insurance marketplace. It allows employee benefit, property casualty and retirement planning brokers a platform to work collaboratively with other small brokers and offer clients an integrated, seamless solution for all of their insurance needs – an approach larger regional and national brokers will be using to grow their market share. By joining the cooperative, small and mid-sized brokers can stay small and independent, grow their businesses, lower operating costs and offer services and support to their clients on par with much larger firms.

With the up-holding by the Supreme Court of President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act small and mid-sized employee benefit brokers will face growing competition from health care exchanges and from regional and national brokerage firms for their multi-employee clients. US-IBC gives them the ability to retain their existing clients and expand their businesses using a web based technology suite to improve their operations, lower costs and improve client support services. The Cooperative also allows brokers of property casualty and retirement planning services to bundle those offerings with employee benefits and offer their clients an integrated insurance solution by working collaboratively with other members of the Cooperative. Members pay a monthly membership fee and get a basic set of services that includes email, voice over internet phone service, video conferencing, web based issue tracking, electronic document management tools, an online resource library for brokers and their clients and a web portal that can be customized for clients. Additional services and support can be purchased from the Cooperative on an as needed basis.

Members will decide what additional services the Cooperative will offer in the future. These may include employee health benefits for Cooperative members, shared administrative support services members can use on an ala carte basis, centralized billing services, book keeping, and payroll services for clients/members - among others. All services are provided at cost to members – and the purchasing power of an ever growing membership base will be used to decrease costs over time.
