Portland, Ore. (PRWEB) July 18, 2012
As new models for funding font development are on the rise, Extensis announced today its resident typography expert Thomas Phinney will explore this hot topic with fellow industry experts at TypeCon2012 in Milwaukee, WI on August 4, 2012.
Joined by font designers Jeremy Dooley of Insigne Design, Matt Griffin of Bearded, and Marcelo Magalhães Pereira, Phinney will zero in on crowdfunding and the new crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter. The panel will also be joined by Ajay Surie of Google Web Fonts, which has played an active role in funding open source fonts both directly and via Kickstarter.
“Crowdfunding looks to be the biggest new development in the economics of type design since the internet gave us online font sales and delivery 15 years ago,” said Phinney, Senior Product Manager, Fonts & Typography at Extensis. “It’s not only going to change how people get paid for type design work, but what fonts they make, how they make them, and what skills are needed to be successful at type design! It’s the proverbial game-changer.”
Phinney and the group will deliberate key questions including:
- What are the main factors in successfully funding a typeface?
- Why do some succeed and others fail?
- How does Kickstarter work?
- Does it work for type design?
- How important has been the backing of Google Web Fonts, and how has Kickstarter worked for proprietary (rather than open source) fonts?
- How will it impact the financial and aesthetic future of type design?
