“You make your bed, you lie in it.” People have grown to hate this saying. They, however, have no choice but to lie in the beds they have made for themselves. Published in June 2011, “You Made Your Bed” by Darleen Turner tells how some beds are not so easy to lie in through the story of a young woman who suddenly finds herself in one of life’s unexpected challenges.
Charlene is ecstatic when she gets the job she really had set her heart on and is happy in her life. She knows she won’t have to stay in Mary’s attic for too long. Just when she thinks all her dreams are coming true, she gets the devastating news that she is pregnant, her landlady is sick, and she has to move. Her life spirals out of control, and she finds that the bed she has to lie in is far beyond her imagination and belief.
Charlene has no idea how she was going to keep looking for that bright light at the end of every tunnel when all she can see is a black hole—with the exception of one place, a place she feared to go. Trust did not come so easy to Charlene anymore. So many times, she wishes she could return to Mary’s attic where life itself had been safe and easy. But she realizes that after “You Made Your Bed”, there is no turning back. She could only hope that God would help her find a better place than Mary’s attic.
