Author Margaret Hauwa Kassam treats young readers with an equally enlightening and amusing story in her newly published book, Baba and Snoopy. It is a warmly-told picture book incisively capturing the candid relationship between humans and their affectionate pets.

This book follows the story of 10-year old Baba who finds a helplessly injured stray puppy in a refuse dump. He fondly names it as Snoopy. The boy takes Snoopy home and nurses it back to good health. After a few weeks, Baba finds out Snoopy’s original owner, also their neighbor, and returns him back. Baba and his family were sad to see Snoopy go as they have grown fond of him, including their two other canines, Teddy and Blacker. However, Snoopy has also grown fond of his newfound family too that he can’t help but run back to them. Consequently, Snoopy was given to Baba as a gift.

One day, while Baba and Snoopy were playing together, a car came swooping across from the other street. And before Baba could do anything, Snoopy was under the tyres of the car. The driver didn’t even stop to see what he had done. Baba and the entire family just lost Snoopy. Will Baba be able to cope with the unexpected loss?

Each lovingly-illustrated page of Baba and Snoopy teaches young readers the value of life and subtly illustrates the meaning of loss and its stages-denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance. Kassam’s buoyant prose and deftness in storytelling delivers a positively powerful message to audiences that loss often comes with something new that needs to be found.
