The two-day, in-depth workshop teaches managers, change agents, and continuous improvement professionals how to use a problem solving methodology based on the scientific method of plan-do-check-act (PDCA).

The nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) today expanded its summer and fall lean management training curriculum by adding Problem Solving to Align Purpose, Process, and People to the schedule for November 6-7, 2012.

The two-day, in-depth workshop teaches managers, change agents, and continuous improvement professionals how to use a problem solving methodology based on the scientific method of plan-do-check-act (PDCA), and how to make problem-solving the centerpiece of corporate culture. The workshop is an expanded version of LEI’s one-day Lean Problem Solving class.

Workshop topics include:

  • How to use an eight-step process to solve business problems
  • How to implement and sustain a problem solving culture based on the scientific method of PDCA
  • How to use problem solving to deploy company strategy
  • How to use a problem solving flowchart template
  • How to use the one-page 11x17-inch documents known as A3 Reports to visualize problem solving thinking

Instructor Tracey Richardson was one of the first team members hired at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, where she learned Toyota’s lean business system from company trainers and served as a Group Leader and Quality Circle Advisor. She now is president of Teaching Lean, Inc.

What Is Lean
The terms lean manufacturing, lean production, or lean management refer to a complete business system for organizing and managing product development, operations, suppliers, customer relations, and the overall enterprise that requires less capital, material, space, time, or human effort to produce products and services with fewer defects to precise customer desires, compared with traditional modern management. While the conventional business focus is on optimizing individual processes, lean focuses on optimizing the flow of value to customers across individual processes.
