New statistics show that Google’s Android OS is taking over the smartphone market – the platform having a share of over 50% of the smartphone markets in Europe, US and Australia.

In a report undertaken by esteemed market analysis company, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, it was shown that in the UK alone, Android leads the smartphone market with 57.2%. It is followed by iOS with 25.6%, and then by Windows Phone 7 with 3.7%. Over the previous year, both the iOS and Windows platforms had an increase of 5.4% and 2% in their sales, respectively. The Android smartphone have also experienced a rise in sales by 8.5% since July 2011.

According to the same report, other smartphone operating systems in the United Kingdom had sharp declines in demand. The BlackBerry OS by RIM had the greatest decline – from having a 19.3% market share in the previous year to just 10.6% this year. Other mobile phone OS, such as Bada, Symbian and vanilla Windows Mobile have practically disappeared in the market completely.

In Europe as a whole, Android has also taken over the smartphone sales figures. In Spain, Android had an 84.1% share while Apple’s iOS only had 3.2% - which is even less than Symbian.

In the US market however, Android sales have dropped from 57% to 50.2%. Iphone sales, on the other hand, have increased in the US from 8.7% to 37.4%, while BlackBerry only had a 3% share of the market.

In Australia, the figures are relatively the same with that of Europe. According to the market report, Android’s share has increased from 36.4% to 56.9%, while the iOS plummeted from 36.9% in 2011 to 30.5% in shares. Windows Phone 7 is gaining some ground in Australia, with 4.8% of the market, an increase of 2.7%.

According to industry analysts, there are numerous reasons as to why Android has been gaining popularity in some large countries. And among those is the fact that this mobile phone operating system offers more functionality and affordability to consumers, as compared to other smartphones and mobile devices.

Dominic Sunnebo, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’s Consumer Insights Director, explained why Android seems to be overtaking other mobile devices: "Android handsets currently offer an easier platform to enable these consumers to upgrade, as many first time smartphone consumers state ‘price of handset’ and ‘multimedia capabilities’ as their main reason for choosing an Android device."
