International Women’s Organization Launches New Online Volunteer Platform

Soroptimist International of the Americas, an international volunteer organization of business and professional women who work to improve the social and economic lives of women and girls, is pleased to announce the launch of its virtual community,

Live Your Dream is an online platform that empowers offline action. It is open to anyone, and free to join. Opportunities include advocacy as well as hands-on participation in a number of award-winning Soroptimist projects.

The site offers programs on topics including women’s economic empowerment, ending violence against women and teens, human trafficking and more—while also offering participants opportunities to gain inspiration in their own lives. For instance, Live Your Dream participants can reach out to local schools and create awareness about teen dating violence. Or they can identify women in their community who need to return to school, help them fill out an application for the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards program, and provide other assistance as needed. Participants choose their level of involvement and how they’d like to engage.

“’Aspire to live your dream, inspire others to live theirs,’” is the Live Your Dream tagline, and that’s exactly what this community will strive to do,” says Soroptimist’s Executive Director/CEO Elizabeth Lucas.

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist, like others in its industry, has witnessed many changes in the volunteer landscape over the years. After doing significant research, membership satisfaction studies and closely monitoring volunteering trends, Soroptimist realized that while its mission remains relevant, it needed to offer new options in how that mission is delivered.

“Some people continue to crave the face-to-face experience that club membership offers,” states Lucas. “But a lot of volunteers, especially young people, want flexibility. They’re time-crunched and spread thin and they want something they can do quickly and on their own terms.

“In addition, social media has changed the volunteer world in a fundamental way. People have so many choices in terms of causes and level of engagement when it comes to their volunteer preferences. All of these factors are what led us to create this new volunteer platform.”

While there are many online platforms that encourage volunteerism and activism, few offer hands-on opportunities that participants can carry out on their own. This quality is what sets apart from other online communities. Soroptimist believes there is strength in numbers and that collectively—through both the club and new online platform—it has the power to serve more women and girls in innovative ways.
