Wins First Place in U.S. Commerce Department’s “Business Apps Challenge”

The U.S. Commerce Department announced today that has won first prize in the nationwide Commerce Business Apps Challenge. SizeUp empowers businesses to make smarter choices by providing many of the same demographic, industry, business, geographic, competitiveness and cost-of-business data that large corporations use every day – at no cost.

In its announcement, the Commerce Department stated that SizeUp provides "a comprehensive overview to small and medium-sized business about their competitiveness and where to find resources to improve. This will improve the success of small businesses so they can prosper and create new jobs."

The prestigious judging panel that selected SizeUp included Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook; Vint Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist at Google; Vivek Kundura, VP at; Tim O’Reilly, CEO of O'Reilly Media; John Bryson, U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Steven Van Roekel, CIO of the United States.

Specifically, SizeUp super crunches millions of data points from both public and private sources to provide three core features:

1.    Map of the competition: Business owners can map where competitors, customers, and suppliers are located, and can use the map to isolate areas with many potential customers but little competition.
2.    Benchmark a specific business: Entrepreneurs can see how their business "sizes up" by comparing their performance to all other industry competitors.
3.    Find the best places to advertise: Business owners can identify areas with the highest revenue for an industry, the most underserved markets, and can create custom demographic and business reports.
