American Syrian Coalition Commended Representatives for Sponsoring H.R. 742

Today the American Syrian Coalition (ASC) commended Rep. Laura Richardson for introducing H. Res. 742, a bipartisan resolution condemning the Russian government for continuing to sell offensive weapons to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, which is using them to violently suppress peaceful demonstrations and protests by innocent Syrian citizens.

Joining Rep. Richardson as original cosponsors of the resolution are Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee; Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee; Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations; Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee; and Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC), Vice Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee.

A companion resolution was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX); Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-IL); Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA); Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ); and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH).

"The cosponsors of H. R. 742 stood courageously with the Syrian people and we wholeheartedly appreciate their efforts to help bring an end to the brutal Assad regime. We are grateful for their support of the Syrian people and for their stance for justice, freedom and democracy," said Dr. Mahmoud Khattab, Chairman of the ASC.

The ASC was formed in April of 2012 to coordinate the efforts of various Syrian-American groups. The coalition's members are: the Syrian Emergency Task Force, the Syrian American Council, United for a Free Syria, and the Syrian Expatriates Organization.
