Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 23, 2012
As concussions become a bigger topic across professional, collegiate, and youth sports, two Phoenix-area companies are working together to help raise awareness of the importance of baseline concussion testing: Athletes’ Performance, a world leader in human performance training, and Axon Sports, a leader in the health and training of the Athletic Brain. As part of the incentive to athletes to complete the baseline assessment module of the Axon Sports Computerized Cognitive Assessment Tool (CCAT), Athletes’ Performance is offering three training sessions in either their Youth (ages 11 – 13) or High School (Grades 9 – 12) performance training programs.
Mayo Clinic in Arizona is currently offering the Axon Sports CCAT for free to all middle school and high school athletes in the state of Arizona.
“Receiving a baseline concussion test should be common practice today for any young athlete, no matter their sport,” said Jason Sada, president of Axon Sports. “A baseline test serves as an athlete's benchmark. It establishes the individual athlete's level of cognition at that point in time. The baseline test can then be used as the comparison for any subsequent after injury test and serve as an aid in determining whether or not the athlete has fully recovered their cognition back to their baseline level.”
The (CCAT) measures the speed and accuracy of different aspects of thinking: processing speed, attention, learning and working memory. It features two scored tests: baseline and after injury. Each test features four tasks that use playing cards. The brief cognitive test makes it easy for teams to administer multiple assessments in a short period of time, with the results being easily stored and accessed online.
Athletes who complete the CCAT will also be eligible for three training sessions at Athletes’ Performance. Located in Phoenix, Athletes’ Performance recently supported the top 4 draft picks and 63 total drafted athletes in the 2012 NFL Draft, as well as 92 MLB/MiLB players who prepared for the 2012 season.
“As we see more and more professional athletes suffer the effects of concussions, we believe it’s imperative that young athletes get a baseline assessment like the CCAT so that they know when it is safe to return to play and when it is not,” said Mark Verstegen, founder and president of Athletes’ Performance. “By offering athletes training sessions at our world-class facility, we want to reward them for taking the time and effort to protect their brain health in the same way they make the time and efforts to train their physical abilities.”
“Since young athletes are one of the groups most vulnerable to concussion, we believe that baseline concussion testing is a critical first step in protecting their health and safety,” said Sada. “We appreciate that Mayo Clinic is able to offer the CCAT free of charge to Arizona youth and high school athletes and teams, and look forward to continuing to educate the community on concussion prevention, safety and treatment.”
Athletes interested in taking the Axon Sports CCAT can complete a baseline test by registering for an account at http://www.axonsports.com/index.cfm. If you are an athlete in Arizona, contact concussion(at)mayo(dot)edu for a voucher code for a complimentary baseline test. About Axon Sports
Axon Sports is dedicated to protecting and training the Athletic Brain. The company was launched in August of 2010 with the Axon Sports Computerized Cognitive Assessment Tool (CCAT), which is currently used by major professional teams and leading medical providers to safeguard the cognitive health of athletes of all ages. The CCAT is not a medical device. Results should be interpreted only by a medical professional. In addition to athlete safety, Axon is also transforming the way an athlete trains for sport by developing new training tools that will accelerate the acquisition of athletic expertise. Using Axon programs, athletes can get added 'mental reps' to train the Athletic Brain without taxing the body or risking injury. To learn more about Axon Sports, please visit axonsports.com.
