We elected to purchase from WPP because their price and availability were good, and the products they recommended met all of the specifications, said Alan Calaway, Senior Project Manager of Stonewall Constructors.

Worldwide Power Products (WPP), a power-generation equipment provider to industrial clients worldwide, today announced that it provided 14 natural gas generators for an emergency, stand-by power project for water and sanitary sewer providers in Galveston County Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs). The project was initiated to curtail the possibility that MUD residents—whose water and sewer capabilities were knocked out during Hurricane Ike in 2008—would suffer unsanitary conditions again. WPP was brought into the project by Stonewall Constructors LLC, which was awarded the $781,818.25 contract for generator purchase and installation by the Galveston County Commissioners Court.
“We elected to purchase from WPP because their price and availability were good, and the products they recommended met all of the specifications,” said Alan Calaway, Senior Project Manager of Stonewall Constructors.
The generators were custom manufactured to the specifications of Galveston County engineers, which wanted to ensure that during an electrical outage, the generators could provide sufficient reliable failover power within seconds. Because the lead time for the custom-built generators ran 12 weeks or more, WPP also guaranteed to provide loaner generators if a MUD lost power due to a storm event during generator fabrication.
“Fortunately there were no storms during the contract period but the engineers were pleased to have the reassurance of WPP just in case,” continued Calaway.
The Galveston County project, funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Rural Affairs, mirrors efforts taking place across the Gulf region after several years of destructive storms put cities and counties on alert.
“We have been contacted by numerous municipalities and agencies working on permanent failover generator systems,” said WPP Executive Vice President Mark Lum. “In some cases, they have recently gained access to disaster recovery funds, or they are responding to newly developed mandates. In others, they simply want to be prepared. Now that the 2012 hurricane season is upon us, WPP stands ready to provide generator sets for permanent, standby and emergency power needs, sometimes in as few as four hours.”
MUDs selected for the project were Bayview (two generators), Baycliff (three generators), San Leon (six generators) and Freddiesville (three generators). “These are low-lying areas of unincorporated Galveston County,” said Calaway. “When you have a 10’ tide, they are underwater. Prior to this project, they had no solution in place. During Hurricane Ike, residents were without water for a month or more.”
“It’s unfortunate that the red tape with Ike recovery projects takes so long to navigate,” stated County Judge Jim Yarbrough in a Galveston County announcement about the project. “But we are making progress and are happy to be doing some things that will make our county stronger before the next major storm.”
