A majority of US adults say the statue of Penn State’s late football coach Joe Paterno should be removed from campus, and a plurality say the penalty for the child sexual abuse scandal involving a former assistant coach should be at least a one-year shut down of the school’s football program, finds a new IBOPE Inteligência poll.

The interactive poll, conducted from July 19-21, was conducted prior to the statue of Paterno being removed on the morning of July 22.

A rounded total of 56% either strongly disagree (38%) or somewhat disagree (19%) that the Paterno statue should remain on the Penn State campus, while a rounded total of 25% either strongly agree (10%) or somewhat agree (16%) it should stay up. The rest (19%) are not sure.

A total of 49% either strongly agree (30%) or somewhat agree (19%) that the NCAA should shut down the Penn State football program for at least one year, while 38% either strongly disagree (19%) or somewhat disagree (19%). The rest (13%) are not sure.

On July 23, the NCAA announced penalties against Penn State that include a four-year postseason ban, the loss of 40 scholarships over four years and a $60 million fine stemming from its cover-up in the wake of the child sex-abuse scandal surrounding former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The penalties do not include shutting down the football program.

IBOPE Inteligência conducted an online survey of 2,098 US adults. The margin of error is +/- 2.2 percentage points. A sampling of IBOPE Inteligência's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender and education to more accurately reflect the population.
