Pregnant Moms Rap about Pillow Tag Regulations in Crowdfunding Music Video for Maternity Pillow Business

If mompreneur Kerri Smith wants to sell her maternity support pillow online, she will have to pay $4,460 in pillow tag registration fees this year. Smith got so mad that she wrote a rap, enlisted some pregnant mom friends, and filmed a music video to promote her crowdfunding campaign at

BellyRest is a maternity support pillow Smith invented when she was pregnant with her daughter. Smith was ready to begin selling BellyRest via the internet when she learned about the pillow tag laws.

15 states require law tags on pillows. Each of those 15 states charges a different registration fee, ranging from $5 per year to $720 per year. “It’s ridiculous,” said Smith. “I was ready to start my business when I learned that I needed to pay $4,460 the first year just to sell my pillow on the internet. Fees like that don’t make sense to me when all politicians talk about is job creation and promoting economic growth. It’s anti-small business if you ask me.”

Smith has launched a 30-day IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign to pre-sell enough pillows to cover the costs of the pillow tag registration fees. The campaign began on Monday, July 16, 2012. The campaign page can be found at Without a pillow tag, BellyRest cannot legally be sold through an online store like that ships to all 50 states.

To promote the campaign, Smith co-wrote a novelty rap with mom-friend, Julie Kosoglow, called “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law.” The song highlights the reasons why Smith needs funding for pillow tags and also plays on her own experiences as a little girl wondering if she’d go to jail for cutting the tags off pillows. Three other moms joined Smith and Kosoglow to produce the music video.

The 30-day campaign ends on August 14, 2012. Pillows can be pre-ordered for $50. A limited number of pillows will be available for early backers at $40 each. There are also rewards for non-pregnant contributors. At the $5 level, backers receive an MP3 of the pillow tag rap. For a $25 contribution, backers receive a reusable tote bag with the phrase “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law” printed on the side.

Julie Snyder, mother of three, shared her experience with BellyRest: “For my first two pregnancies, I used a large body pillow that we called ‘the extra person in bed.’ I used BellyRest during my third pregnancy. I had really bad nerve pain and was extremely uncomfortable. BellyRest helped me sleep better and significantly reduced the nerve pain (at least while I was in bed). I’m never going back to the bulky body pillow!”

Smith is encouraging pregnant women to pre-order pillows at If she can pre-sell enough pillows, she will be able to cover the costs of the pillow tag registration fees.
