If businesses were run on principles espoused by this book, we wouldn’t be in the midst of this global financial upheaval.

Better business doesn’t have to be impersonal.

In her book, "Approaching the Corporate Heart: Breaking Through to New Horizons of Personal and Professional Success" (published by Balboa Press), Margot Cairnes brings the heart back to business. Cairnes revised the book, originally published in 1998, in response to the Occupy Wall Street movement and the international protests that preceded it.

“If businesses were run on principles espoused by this book, we wouldn’t be in the midst of this global financial upheaval,” Cairnes says. “Most economic disasters occur because our institutions are outdated.

“This book is about how to build the institutions that we deserve.”

In the book, Cairnes visits topics of interest to corporations, communities and individuals alike, focusing on how to bring empathy into an environment that traditionally espouses cynicism and cutthroat practices. The importance, Cairnes says, is realizing that empathy and compassion aren’t just options-- these traits can actually lead to more success in both the professional and personal realms.

“We live in a time of great complexity and change,” Cairnes says. “What used to make sense is now much more uncertain, in both our work and personal lives. Leading our own lives, leading our community and leading in business and government has never been more challenging.”
