"It’s a good feeling knowing that when we tell our members that their safety is our number one priority we’re able to back it up,” said Meriggi.

Great Expectations is a national dating service with more than 35 years of experience, and for just under a decade they have strived to also become the safest option for singles. Teaming up with online background check provider, http://www.backgroundchecks.com, Great Expectations takes the time to screen every potential member before allowing them to join their service.
“Since 1999, backgroundchecks.com has been providing our partners one of the most robust online background check options available. We are proud to partner with Great Expectations to provide the added comfort that backgroundchecks.com’s solutions can provide, with searches that cover more sources than our competition, offering hundreds of million criminal records, county and state criminal record repositories, sex offender registries, and government and terrorist watch lists,” said Craig Kessler, President of Backgroundchecks.com.
Great Expectations decided to start running background checks as a way to give their members that added sense of safety. When Great Expectations decided to start running background checks, many singles had started turning to online dating as an alternative to meet people.
“As a company, we felt it was necessary to give our members a safe environment to meet people, what you see is what you get. There is no room for misrepresentation in our service. Many of our clients are single parents, and not only do we have to keep our members safe, we also have to think about the family that comes along with that member,” said John Meriggi, current President of Great Expectations.
According to a study conducted by the NY Times in 2011, approximately 81 percent of online daters lie on their profile (New York Times: Love, Lies and What they learned), and although many of the online dating sites claim to have fraud teams to delete ‘fake profiles’ many still fall through the cracks. Both men and women have been scammed out of thousands of dollars while searching for love online, and the majority of the time they are speaking to individuals out of Asia or Africa. There have also been recent incidents where individuals scheduled a time to meet this person offline and end up injured in some way.
“Recently, a couple of men wanted to join our service at our location. Both seemed very sweet and harmless, however, after the mandatory background we found that each man had multiple felonies ranging from forgery and criminal impersonation to endangerment and assault. They were immediately rejected,” said Tammy Smith, Great Expectations' Phoenix Director.
In the month of June the Fort Worth and Orlando offices of Great Expectations rejected several individuals including a man with two counts of Child Molestation and another man with Assault and Battery of a Pregnant Woman.
“We understand that everyone has made mistakes in their past, and it’s not our job to judge them, however, we have to keep the well-being of our other members in mind as well. It’s a good feeling knowing that when we tell our members that their safety is our number one priority we’re able to back it up,” said Meriggi.
The company agrees that adding the mandatory background checks to the membership requirement was one of the best moves that the company has made in recent years, both for the success of those that rely on Great Expectations to find them true love and for the safety of the clients that the matchmaking dating service company will continue to support in that journey towards happiness.
