A health and safety resource has encouraged business owners to invest in safety signs from a reputable supplier and to provide personal protective equipment when necessary.
The advice from whatishealthandsafety.co.uk follows worrying statistics from HSE – the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness. According to the website, over 200 employers die every year at work and over one million are injured.
Matt Hornsby, a spokesman for the website said: “Health and safety is an important part of business that should not be ignored. The right training should be given to all members of staff and the worksite should be made as secure as possible. Safety signs help to warn employees of potential hazards and personal protective equipment provides adequate protection.”
The Health and Safety Executive has also revealed that forestry is one of the most dangerous industries in the UK. Reports indicate that in the five years up to March 2010, there was an average of 10.4 fatalities per 100,000 workers in the forest industry – making this one of the highest fatality rates of any employment sector in Great Britain.
Commenting on the situation, Matt Hornsby said: “Workplace fatalities are deeply distressing and companies should do all they can to safeguard their premises. Everything from CCTV to safety cones can help, so it’s worth carrying out a thorough risk assessment and stocking up on the right equipment.”
Back in May, a two day summit was held at Forestry Commission Scotland's headquarters in Edinburgh in an attempt to tackle the high rate of fatal and major injuries in the industry. Senior figures within the forestry industry are working alongside the HSE to make a lasting change to the sorry safety record of this sector.
