James Kinney, a Certified Financial Planner™ and owner of Financial Pathway Advisors, LLC (http://www.financialpathways.net) has attained the Certified College Planning Specialist (CCPS) certification from the National Institute of Certified College Planners. There are fewer than 500 Certified College Planning Specialists in the country.

“Financial planners and investment advisers that have made the investment in time, education, and training to become genuine experts in college planning deserve special recognition,” says Rick Darvis, CPA, one of the nation’s preeminent experts on planning for college. “The CCPS certification helps to distinguish those professionals that have made that commitment.”

The National Institute of Certified College Planners (http://www.niccp.com) restricts the CCPS certification to registered investment advisors, licensed securities agents, CPAs, attorneys, and other higher education professionals that assist families in preparing for the financial cost of sending children to college. The organization provides educational resources and support to CCPS candidates and designees, including training and testing in the areas of paying for college, saving for college, and advanced college funding strategies.

"I chose to pursue this certification because of the impact that increasing college costs are having on my clients' lives" explains Mr. Kinney. "As the parent of four children in high school and college, this subject is personal to me. The choices that students and parents make when deciding how to pay for college can have consequences which last well beyond the college years. Therefore, careful planning is essential to avoid future regrets. Unfortunately, the entire system of college aid, FAFSA and PROFILE applications, student loans, grants, scholarships, merit and need based aid has become dreadfully complex. It can be very difficult for families to obtain and process all the information they need to make sensible choices. With my own experience combined with the NICCP training, I believe I can help families make the most of available resources, while avoiding potential pitfalls such as excessive student loan debt or depleted retirement accounts."

Financial Pathway Advisors LLC (http://www.financialpathways.net) is an independent financial planning practice and Registered Investment Advisory firm located in Bridgewater (Somerset County) New Jersey. The firm specializes in providing fee based planning and investment management services to families throughout central and northern New Jersey.

The National Institute of Certified College Planners (NICCP) is dedicated solely to the administration and maintenance of the Certified College Planning Specialist (CCPS) certification program. The NICCP web site http://www.niccp.com features a listing of all current and active CCPS designees. The mission of the NICCP is to advance the principles of financial planning for higher education through providing recognition and support to those experienced financial professionals who devote a large portion of their practices to helping families plan financially for college.
