So often people are caught unawares by a job opportunity, layoff, or life change that requires them to seek work. By declaring September as the official update month, people will have the opportunity to better control and champion their futures.

Over the last 12 years, since the global association of Career Directors International (CDI) registered Update Your Resume Month, much has changed in the job market. However, one thing still stands true – it is critically important for all adults to keep their resumes up-to-date.

Why in keeping the resume updated recommended for all adults and not just for those who are currently employed or looking for work?

CDI President, Laura DeCarlo, states, “So often people are caught unaware by a surprise job opportunity, layoff, or a pressing life change that requires them to immediately seek work. When job seekers need their resume yesterday it can frequently lead to unnecessary stress and development of an ineffective resume that fails to showcase the breadth of the job seeker’s talents, experience, and accomplishments. By declaring September as the official update month, people will have the opportunity to better control and champion their own futures on their own terms.”

Why did CDI select September for Update Your Resume Month?

There is nothing random about why the founders at CDI selected September for career care-taking. In September, summer vacations have been set aside, taxes are long past, and the holidays aren’t yet on the calendar. While children are embarking on starting the new school year, adults should consider this time to also start fresh by taking stock of their professional attributes and career value by updating their resumes.

CDI’s members represent the career and resume industry’s top certified and experienced professionals, who have assembled numerous resources to assist job seekers who want accurate, expert advice and strategy. Job seekers can access these resources, free of charge, in the CDI Job Seeker Center.

From the front page of the Center, job seekers will have access to expert articles, award-winning resume samples, and results of the 2012 Global Hiring Survey on what hiring authorities want in resumes.

Job seekers can also reach the official Update Your Resume Month page via the above link, which provides additional expert resume writing tips along with a downloadable resume update tracking form.

Finally, if professional help or advice is needed, CDI provides a database of their member experts at the Center, along with a list of helpful tips on how to effectively select and vet a potential service provider.

During Update Your Resume Month, resume writers and career practitioners are encouraged to alert job seekers to the value of taking this crucial step of updating their resumes as part of their regular career management practices.

Those resume and career practitioners who wish to spread the word about Update Your Resume Month, or to use it as a platform for visibility, are welcome to display one of the official Update Your Resume Month event badges.

CDI also makes a wide array of resources available to its members such as free audio-on-demand resume classes, promotional materials for Update Your Resume Month, and how-to resume writing PowerPoint presentations.

CDI’s goal is to help career and resume professionals to confidently keep their skills up-to-date so that job seekers know they can count on the expert qualifications of a CDI member when looking for assistance with their resumes or job search.
