The Nemetschek Engineering Group is pleased to announce the availability of Scia Engineer 2012. Scia Engineer 2012 provides significant improvements for structural and civil engineers who are to migrate to, or improve their 3D workflows.

Nemetschek, in collaboration with buildingSMART®, is continuing to drive interoperability with support for Open BIM. Scia Engineer 2012 offers engineers a straightforward way to exchange models and work iteratively with designers, contractors and fabricators. With improved support for IFC, engineers using Scia Engineer 2012 can efficiently exchange models with almost 150 BIM-compliant software programs.

Scia Engineer 2012 extends its Open BIM technology to better support contractors, fabricators, and precast concrete manufacturers,” says Geert Adriaenssens, Product Manager Design Solutions, Nemetschek Scia.
For concrete, Scia Engineer 2012 IFC import/export supports reinforcing, making it possible to exchange detailed reinforced concrete models. For steel, Scia Engineer 2012 IFC support now covers the export of steel connections, and the import/export of steel assemblies.
“Our goal is to allow our users to add value to the entire BIM process—Design, Construction and Fabrication,” continues Adriaenssens.
Scia Engineer 2012 improves analysis with a number of finite element solver improvements including the addition of the Lanczos method, and third-order Picard method for geometric non-linear calculations. Users will also find a number of speed and FEA usability improvements. For sequential analysis and parametric studies, Scia Engineer 2012 introduces a new optimization engine. Users can set up problems in Scia Engineer and have the optimization engine automatically run hundreds or even thousands of comparisons to derive an optimal design solution. With the optimization engine, engineers can optimize for all aspects of a design including engineering, manufacturing, constructability and costs.
Scia Engineer 2012 expands its support for Eurocodes and IBC, as well as introduces new support for Brazilian codes. Engineers working on projects in Europe will appreciate new support for timber design EN 1995-1-1, bridge combinations according to Eurocode 0, and improved masonry materials according to EC6. For the U.S., and others that use IBC, Scia Engineer 2012 offers substantial improvements in concrete design, including support for ACI 318-08, the ability to model reinforcing schemes, and import/export reinforcing to IFC. In addition, Scia Engineer 2012 offers new support for Brazilian Code ABNT NBR 6118:2003. And, it is now available in the Italian language.
