The Summer Learning course offered by Everest Academy has brought kindergarten and 1st grade students back to school this July. The optional course, taught by Everest kindergarten teacher Mrs. Joanna DiSabato, ran from July 9-20. Subjects covered included science, math, language arts, writing, social studies and Catholic formation. Laptops and Mimio board technology were integrated throughout the course whenever possible.

According to Mrs. DiSabato, the students were excited once the course began, though they at first had mixed emotions about returning to school during their summer vacation,. “One day we found a praying mantis outside, and another day watched butterflies hatching” she said. Students were kept active with a four-hour schedule covering six units daily. The units offered were “A Bug’s Life”, “Let’s Explore”, “Apostles Reader’s Theater”, “Book Club”, “Young Authors”, and “Fun with Numbers”. In the unit “A Bug’s Life”, students designed an ant farm, ladybug colony and butterfly habitats. As part of “Let’s Explore”, they learned about the different continents through fun projects and the use of the interactive Mimio board. The other units covered oral reading, reading comprehension, writing, and math.

The course was designed for kindergarten and 1st grade students as a way to help them prepare for the beginning of the new school year, especially those who will be attending Everest for the first time. During these two weeks the students are able to become more familiar with the school, meet fellow classmates, and be exposed to what they’ll do in the upcoming year. “For kindergarten students, it’s a jump start”, said Mrs. DiSabato, “and for 1st grade students it reinforces what they have learned in kindergarten.” The course was so popular with school parents that it filled almost immediately after being announced in the spring.
