Decernis Receives New Patent for System and Method For Concept Searching

Decernis LLC (http://www.decernis.com) announced today the award of a new patent for a method and system to index and search for broad concepts in a data processing system for compliance. With this innovation anyone searching the Internet can enter a broad concept that might be a type of requirement, such as “labeling,” or the function of a food additive, such as “preservative,” and receive all relevant references across language or synonyms. A similar use of the patent applies to enterprise systems. In application this invention will make global compliance analysis easier and more accurate where the user is working in multi-lingual legal and scientific subject matters. The patent awarded to Decernis LLC is US 8,229,958, issued on July 24, 2012.

The invention, the third patent awarded to Decernis LLC, provides the means to accurately identify and index risks, hazards and properties of chemicals, foods and commodities -- as concepts -- across languages within any document or database. The patent applies to documents and data relevant to determining compliance of an article or material, a food, biological agent or organism, a chemical substance as well as a physical or toxicological property.

One example where the company has put this technology to use is in its product, gComply Plus. gComply Plus provides a manufacturer with the capability to generate red-light, green-light matrix reports to determine the compliance status of a product and its ingredients around the world, and to then generate a compliance certificate. To do this the patented system helps to categorize the functions and usages of a product’s components as concepts to structure the analysis. This approach has been applied to the automated analysis of food additive groups under the new European Union List of Food Additives, the Codex Alimentarius and similar requirements, for example. Complex analyses can be performed to support the work of the regulatory expert. Other covered applications are in food and consumer product safety, packaging, general chemical control, including REACH regulation.

Another application is within the company’s Decernis News service to discover regulatory and scientific developments related to product safety globally. Decernis has developed a 5-million term multi-lingual library of key terms as concepts related to risks and hazards. Decernis News employs the patented indexing system to dynamically identify such events on a daily basis as a service to its clients.
