New YA Book Warns Teens About Dangers of Texting and Driving

Every day an average of 11 teens die because of car crashes caused by drivers who are distracted by texting on their cell phones. Careful, Isobella Jade’s first book of a new young-adult novel series about the spirit of a girl who dies in a texting and driving crash, has just been released.

“I really found the voice of Estella after my Dad died. Thinking about what happens to the soul when we die and how something has to happen to the spirit of a person. I put a lot of my thoughts about the soul living on into Estella’s persona.

Isobella Jade, best known as the petite model who wrote her memoir Almost 5'4" at the Apple store in New York City, debuts Careful, about a promising teen athlete who dies from a texting-related car crash and her dreams of prom, track trophies and college are all smashed to smithereens. It’s written from the point of view of sixteen-year-old Estella Montclair, who now exists only in spirit form. The young-adult book tackles friendship, family issues, bullying, and teen sex.

Careful (July 26, 2012, Gamine Press) is the first novel in the new series called Careful, Quiet, Invisible, and is available in print and as an ebook. It is a tell-it-like-it-is novel, with each of Estella’s friends embodying personalities and dreams teen girls will find relatable. Written with acute sensory detail, it moves us along with Estella’s spirit as she travels among her family and friends in a fictional town called Willow Ridge, based on Jade’s hometown of Liverpool outside of Syracuse, New York. Even though Estella no longer has a physical body, her powerful love gives her shape to impact the lives of the grieving people she left behind when she died.

In the beginning of the series Estella has difficulty letting go of her feelings toward the girl who caused the crash, but she ultimately finds her new purpose: for her soul to interact with the souls of others in a positive way that springs off affection and hope.

And while Estella can’t prevent the revenge, bullying, and catastrophes that happen to her loved ones, she can influence her family, friends, and the boy she has a crush on in symbolic ways while they shift through their personal changes, grief and depression, diet pill addiction and self-destruction. Estella reminds them with signs of her memory that they aren’t alone and to carry on through their personal hardships while dealing with loss.

Jade knows what it's like to lose a loved one without being given a chance to say a goodbye. Her father died in a propane explosion and fire in 2011, and the first book of the Careful, Quiet, Invisible series was partly inspired by her own grief and perception that there is more out there for us beyond the grave. Jade shares, “I really found the voice of Estella after my Dad died. Thinking about what happens to the soul when we die and how something has to happen to the spirit of a person. I put a lot of my thoughts about the soul living on into Estella’s persona; I wanted to share a soul’s perspective of finding a new beginning.”

Careful, like the title implies, is also a warning to teens and young adults about the dangers of texting while driving. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 13–19 year olds in the United States, according to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and text messaging while driving has become as dangerous for teen’s driving abilities as drinking and driving, according to Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
