Our aim is to help promote open source beyond the scope of universities into the Chinese economy.
Porto Alegre, Brazil (PRWEB) July 27, 2012
Today, at the 14th edition of the International Free Software Forum (FISL), OW2, the global open source community dedicated to open source middleware and generic applications, announces China Open Source Week 2012 (COSW'12). The second edition of China Open Source Week (COSW) will be held in Beijing, Nanjing and Wuxi, October 15-20, 2012.
COSW'12 consists of four main events spread over three areas and addressing open source users, activists, academics, executives, professionals and vendors who will merge their horizons into a unique experience:
- The Scilab / OW2 Programming Contest award conference will be hosted by Nanjing University of Aerospace and Astronautics (NUAA), it is an event designed for students and academics.
- The International Open Source Workshop, held this year in the high-growth area of Wuxi New District, is organized to foster open source awareness in the Wuxi economic region.
- The OW2 Corporate Networking Meeting is an informal event dedicated to high-level executive discussions on open source best practices, it is hosted by BeiHang University.
- The Open Source Communities Day, also held at BeiHang University is probably the largest gathering of open source communities in China.
“With the China Open Source Week our aim is to help promote open source beyond the scope of universities into the Chinese economy” says OW2 CEO Cedric Thomas, "Free but legal software is a spur to economic growth." he adds.
COSW'12 is a multi-organization effort designed to develop broad-scale awareness for open source in China, not only as way to develop great software but also as a viable business model. It aims at extending the reach of open source beyond the scope of universities. The event demonstrates open source as a sustainable and balanced way to develop, use and distribute software, rather than simply a means to (legally) download code.
First launched by OW2, COSW is now co-organized with Scilab, Beijing University of Aerospace and Astronautics, Nanjing University of Aerospace and Astronautics and several Chinese communities with the support of Wuxi New District, ISCAS, CVIC-SE, INRIA, Trustie, Peking University and NUDT.
Founded in January 2007, OW2 is a global independent industry community dedicated to developing open source code infrastructure (middleware and generic applications) and to fostering a vibrant community and business ecosystem. The OW2 Consortium hosts some one hundred technology projects, including ASM, Bonita, eXo Platform, JOnAS, Orbeon Forms, PetALS ESB, SpagoBI and XWiki. Visit http://www.ow2.org.
