This anti-NGV statement is in stark contrast to DOE’s stated support for the emissions reductions benefits of NGVs and for the long-term deployment of NGV technologies.

Today, the American Public Gas Association (APGA) sent a letter to Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu, requesting that the Department provide an explanation of DOE’s position on natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in light of the testimony of Dr. David Greene’s (of the DOE-sponsored Oak Ridge National Laboratory) anti-NGV testimony before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
On July 24, Dr. Greene said in his testimony to the Committee, “It would probably not be worthwhile to deploy a full-scale natural gas refueling infrastructure…and although natural gas produces lower tailpipe GHG emissions than petroleum, those emissions are not low enough to meet the reductions that will be required in the future to protect the global climate.”
In response to these comments, Bert Kalisch, President and CEO of APGA said, “This anti-NGV statement is in stark contrast to DOE’s stated support for the emissions reductions benefits of NGVs and for the long-term deployment of NGV technologies. DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says, “Argonne National Laboratory's GREET model estimates the life cycle petroleum use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of light-duty vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG)…emits approximately 6% to 11% lower levels of GHGs than gasoline throughout the fuel life cycle. A potential 11% reduction in GHGs (according to DOE’s own information) establishes the emissions reductions benefits of NGVs and would appear to be a significant contributor to meeting long-term emissions reductions goals rather than the obstacle that Dr. Greene appears to believe them to be.”
Kalisch went on to note that DOE recently awarded $30 million for NGV research through ARPA-E which demonstrates DOE’s long-term commitment to NGVs and concluded by asking, “As strong supporters of NGVs, APGA respectfully requests that the DOE elucidate its position on NGVs, their emissions, and the DOE’s long-term view of the role of NGVs in the U.S.’ transportation system.”
